Charles Smith – Food & Wine 2009 Wine Maker of the Year
Charles Smith Wines: The Modernist Project is a response to how people generally consume wine today, that is immediately...as in immediately after being purchased at a market, restaurant or bar, to be drunk straight away. Wine in this category is typically either simple, or is a wine that would be much better a few years down the road. "Modernist Project' wines are about putting as much into the bottle as possible. The intent is to create wines to be enjoyed now, but with typicity with regards to variety-that is merlot that tastes like merlot-and to the vineyard-wine that tastes like where it was grown. The wines are full of flavor, balanced, and true to their place of origin.
Tasting Notes: Balanced, rich and explosive. Think red plums, bittersweet cocoa with hints of smoke and cedar. SO SMOOTH, SO NAUGHTY, AND SO VERY, VERY NICE. -Charles Smith
Vineyards: 44% Milbrandt Vineyards-Wahluke Slope, planted in beginning in 1998 by the Milbrandt Family, including Pheasant Vineyard, planted in 2000; comprised of well-drained, sandy gravelly soils deposited by ancient glacial floods. 36% Alder Ridge-Horse Heaven Hills AVA, steep slope rising 1000ft above Columbia River; warm site; 20% from additional Yakima Valley Vineyards.
Elevage: Fruit was picked during the 3rd week of October, after a very encouraging, long growing season. No rain or cold temperatures interfered with slow, steady ripening. Fermented in stainless steel; aged in French oak (cooperage: Nadalié, Central France) 40% new oak; aged 10 months before being bottled on October 22nd.
Bright ruby-red color extends to primary aromatics revealing soft red plums, and suggestions of smoke and cedar. A purposefully, slightly elevated tannic profile puts this Merlot in an entirely new category, providing a robust character that will appeal to all palates. Smooth as velvet, the 2007 "The Velvet Devil' is classic Washington State Merlot — hallmark Columbia Valley. It is ready to drink; a great price; and tastes like the vineyards from which it came, a fact that also makes it "classic Modernist Project.'
2008 Owen Roe Sinister Hand $27.95
Washington State, Columbia ValleyOn this label the family crest depiction of a severed left hand tells the story of a rowing competition among the ONeills & the OReillys (Owen Roe was an ONeill). Whoever touched land first after rowing across the lake was rewarded with the land he touched. Lagging behind, one of the kinsfolk grabs his sword to cleave his hand and pitches it ashore to touch land first. He won the land and eventually ruled over it as king.
Our primary source for this wine is Dr. Steve Elerding's vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills, where the proximity of the Columbia River is a vital part of the success of these traditional Rhone varietals. This wine is very dark with fruit flavors, pepper and an excellent texture. The blend is 62% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 3% Mourvedre.
