South African Wine Tasting

Inari Wines, 39 Piedmont, Saturday, 4:00pm until 7:00pm, $5 per person

This week we will be focusing on wines from Graham Beck Winery in South Africa. The wines will cover the Stellenbosch, Robertson regions. Our salesperson for these wines just returned from a trip to the winery and she was nice enough to loan us her photo album so . . . we can taste the wines, have some appetizers, and look at the actual terroir of the Graham Beck Winery Vineyards.

Graham Beck Sauvignon Blanc 2007 — $11.95
South Africa, Coastal Region
100 % Sauvignon Blanc: The grapes are from 7 different vineyards in the Coastal region.

Tasting notes: "An expression of tropical fruit on the nose ? litchis and granadillas (passion fruit) with notes of green pepper and capsicum. Great concentration of tropical fruit and grassiness and peppers on the palate. A crisp, lively acidity and persistent but elegant finish."

Enjoy as an aperitif or with grilled, smoked and spicy fish and chicken dishes.

Graham Beck "The William" 2003 — $12.95
South Africa, Coastal Region
62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27 % Pinotage, 11% Cabernet Franc.

Tasting notes: "Typical expression of a well structured unique South African blend. Flavours of plum, cherries, cinnamon and cigarbox. Soft and well structured tannins with loads of berriefruit and spices on the palate."

Serve with spicy Cape Malayian dishes, rich meaty or vegetable casseroles, sliced beef, game biltong (dried meat ranging from beef to ostrich) or at a traditional South African braai (outdoor cookout).

Graham Beck "Old Road" Pinotage 2003 — $17.95

South Africa, Coastal Region
100 % Pinotage.

Tasting notes: "Rich, plum and dark chocolate flavours intermingled with delicate clove flavours. Ripe fruit tannins for a structured mouthfeel, succulent and full. Elegant, long finish." Will mature in the bottle for a further 8-10 years.

Serve with full flavoured dishes, meat, pasta or cheese ? even baked puddings.

Graham Beck Brut Rose 2005 — $19.95
South Africa, Robertson and Stellenbosch, Western Cape
80 % Pinot Noir 20 % Chardonnay.

Tasting notes: "Great salmon pink in colour makes this wine look extremely attractive. Noticeable ripe strawberries from the Pinot Noir with a creamy complexity from the Chardonnay. And explosion of raspberry fruit together with some fresh sherbet on the palate with a long fine creamy mousse."
