Finland; the fifth day
Posted by: Aulikki, 08.31.2008We had already prior to leaving for vacation made plans to meet my friends Lennu and Hannu for lunch at a seafood restaurant in island of Reposaari. The restaurant is famous for its tasty seafood buffet that includes a fine selection of whitefish, salmon, Baltic herring, and other local seafood.
THE MARITIME FISHERMEN'S VILLAGE OF PORI
The island of Reposaari is located just outside Pori on the Gulf of Bothnia at the outlet of the River Kokem?enjoki. It lies by the ancient sea route leading from the Baltic Sea to the trading centres located at the mouths of many rivers on the west coast area of Ostrobothnia. The island is about three kilometers long and a half kilometer wide. It is situated in the immediate vicinity of the mainland. Because of its favourable location and this uniquely sheltered and deep natural harbour Reposaari was well known to tradesmen and warriors. In 1558 Reposaari was given by Duke John "for the use and enjoyment" to the town of Pori founded in that same year. At first the island was used by fishermen and summer pasture for livestock. As early as the 17th century the inhabitants of Pori began to use the natural harbour of the island as a port loading for the biggest ships. With the silting of the outlet of the river Kokem?enjoki at the beginning of the 19th century, Reposaari was increasingly utilized as the outer harbour of Pori.
It has been four years since I have seen Lennu and Hannu, it is so good to catch up and after the lunch we toured the lovely fishermen's island and stopped by for coffee and berry pie at their summer house nearby right at the sea.
Later on the afternoon we stopped by a huge supermarket Prisma, where you can do all your groceries, dry cleaning, banking, shop for clothing, as well as home and leisure products, shop at the liquor store and also do your recycling. Recycling in Finland is made very easy to the consumer, with rewards when recycling. At the market you can return all you recyclable glass and plastic bottles and get money from it or you have an option to donate it to charity.
Later in the evening we shared a bottle Finnish Elysee Arctic (sparkling wine with aromatic cloudberries) with all the leftover seafood from previous day's market trip.
